‘Tis a Season Like No Other
I’m dreaming of a safe and meaningful holiday
When I was growing up and my family was anticipating some unhappy version of a holiday: A Thanksgiving when we couldn’t join with our cousins, aunts, and uncles, or a celebration for which the weather didn’t cooperate or our travel plans got botched up … my mom would say, “It’s just another day.” She said it with a mix of resignation and pluck that I can’t quite describe in words.
I thought of that this past Thanksgiving when the pandemic pushed our traditional gatherings out of the realm of possibility. With my daughter on one side of the country, and me on the other and even the idea of visiting with the neighbors next door being fraught with danger, I realized this was not to be “just another day,” as my mom would say, but “a day like no other.”
My husband and I made the best of it, as so many of you did too, with Zoom calls to loved ones, a scaled-down (but no less delicious) feast of gratitude, and a leisurely walk through our neighborhood between courses.
And now, here we go again, the next round of holidays is looming in this year of endless improvisation as we try to keep ourselves and our communities safe and we try to keep hope alive on a sea of uncertainty.
One thing this long pandemic season has taught me is that there is joy in solitude and in simplicity.
Beyond that, I have no idea what this Channukah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, and New Year’s season will look like in our home or in the world at large. But I know it will be a season like no other.
However you choose to celebrate the holidays this year, I hope you find ways to make these days meaningful, joyful, and safe for you and your loved ones.
May you dream and be well,One thing this long pandemic season has taught me is that there is joy in solitude and in simplicity.
