Awake-But Unaware-In the Dream
Notes from a Lucid Dream Dropper
I tend to be a pretty proficient lucid dreamer. But I’ve become an equally proficient Lucid Dream Dropper! (I’ve just coined that phrase to describe my infamous fumble-fingered attempts at gaining lucidity.) I’m equal parts amused and frustrated by these instances when I miss an opportunity to get lucid. No, I that it back, I’m far more amused than frustrated. I’m also intrigued by the subtleties of consciousness that allows these errors to occur.
In this dream, my increasingly well-documented “lucid misses” take on a new element. This time, I enlist a whole group of dream figures in my erroneous conclusion to the question: “Am I awake or dreaming.”
I’m in a distinguished old library with a group of people. We’re sitting around one of those burnished wooden tables you might see in the reference section. I look around and say, “Know what? I think this is a dream.”
So, I decide to do a ‘state check’, and while I’m at it I teach the group: “Let’s look at our watches to see what time it is. This is a good way to find out if we are awake or dreaming.” I look at my watch and the others follow suit.
I look down at the hands on my watch and announce “It’s just about 6:30.” Others chime in with similar reports of times just around there: 6:28, 6:31, etc.
“Good,” I say, and continue with the state checking protocol that is commonly used by lucid dreamers:
“Now, look away from your watches for a couple of minutes,” I tell the group. “When we look back at them we’ll see what happens, and that will let us know whether we’re asleep and dreaming or awake.”
Meanwhile we look around at our environment with the light filtering into the space, the lovely wooden desk behind which the librarian is seated, the vibrancy and clarity of the colors and the light. I’m quite sure we’re awake, but then again there’s a dreamy quality to it all that I can’t quite put my finger on. I remark on this and the others nod in agreement.
After a few moments have passed, we look back at our watches. Mine still says just about 6:30. Given that less than a minute has passed since we last checked, I think this is a sign that we’re awake. After all, when you are dreaming and do this state check, you might find that your dream watch has disappeared, or the watch face melts, or an hour has passed when only a minute should have … I explain all of this to the group. They consult their watches and agree that it seems the time is progressing at a normal rate.
So, I conclude, and the group agrees … we are not dreaming after all.
And so the dream continues … and …
… another lucid opportunity is lost!
