Dreamwork as Play (CV)
The term dreamwork has never felt quite right to me. The word work paired with the word dreams introduces an element of drudgery to an otherwise magical concept. Dreams are playful: They make puns, they joke, they poke fun at us when they think we need it.
Here are some suggestions for playing with your dreams:
- Make a playful poem out of your dreams: Take the key words and images from a dream report and put them together for the fun of it. In the process you might just get a new perspective on your dream!
- Speaking of play-ing, act out a dream! Dream theater can be profound, but you’ll probably find yourself laughing, too, as you act out various parts of your dream.
- Look for puns and plays on words in your dreams & keep running lists of them in your journal.
- Pull down the shades, turn up the music and dance your dreams. (Go ahead, be silly, no one’s watching!)
- Pretend your dreams are real. Try this fill in the blank exercise: If my dream were real, today I’d (“… be running from a slasher…be shopping in Italy… be pregnant…be lost…leap over rooftops…see three moons rising over the ocean…”)
- Make a cartoon strip based on a dream
- Buy a figurine, fetish, or charm based on the animals that show up in your dreams and keep them together on a shelf in your home … watch your collection grow!
Now, was that really so hard? Hardly work at all, right?
