Updates and Inspiration as the trees grow bare, and the days grow dark
And yet the light keeps shining
When I woke yesterday, my bedroom window was filled with trees resplendent in their dresses of golden foliage. Leaves glittered and glided down to the ground in a magnificent dance.
This morning, I opened my eyes, and clouds had rolled in. The trees were more branch than leaf, and although the calendar still tells me it’s October, it felt as though November had arrived.
This is a mundane fact of nature, and a metaphor for the nature of life itself. Change keeps changing, light flows into darkness, and darkness into light. The challenge for me, and perhaps for you, too, is to ride the currents of challenge and charm, heartbreak and heavenly new love, loss and the heart-thrumming call to live, learn from it all, and live larger still!

Each time the darkness descends, there are new depths to explore, as long as I can stay curious and present.
This has been a theme in many of the experiences I’ve written about this past month:
In The Life of H: Sarah, Reimagined, I’ve been exploring the soul-shaking tale of The Binding of Isaac. This is the story that woke me up at a time when I was in the depths of despair more than 30 years ago. I’ve been revisiting it ever since, to try to discover (through poetry, study, and now biblical translation) how such a disturbing story could have offered me so much healing and hope. Well, as I dig into the roots of each word, verse by verse, I’ve been unearthing treasures that might just hold the answer. I share some of my latest insights in these recent posts:
- “Where Has Love Been All Along,” in which I find surprising connections between love and leather Hebrew etymology
- “A Haunting Tale for the Season,” in which I re-introduce that same story about Abraham nearly sacrificing his son, horrors, and all, sure, but also with the joy of finding alternative interpretations through translation.
As for the light! This month I also celebrated my golden wedding anniversary. Well, that’s only partly true. Read more about that in my post,
